SMAC (Southwest Minnesota Agrifuels Cooperative) was a new generation, value-added cooperative that was incorporated on May 10, 1994. The purpose of forming the cooperative was to design, finance, acquire a site, construct, own, operate and maintain a dry mill fuel ethanol plant.

In March of 1996, a limited liability partnership was formed between SMAC and POET. This partnership, with SMAC as the majority owner, is called POET Biorefining - Bingham Lake. At that time, SMAC became a closed cooperative with 256 members.

We completed a 2.5 for 1 unit split on January 1, 2008 increasing the number of outstanding units from 2,019,000 to 5,047,500.

On May 1st 2009, SMAC converted to a Limited Liability Company (LLC) for tax purposes and eliminated the corn commitment of the members.
